For this round of Extreme Highlight & Contour creation I wanted to do something completely different than what was done in class. I really adore the look I came up with for that basic drag queen, however it wasn’t really a look I saw myself in. Which is fine, I was making a performance piece on femininity. It was fun and a look I loved, but it wasn’t me.
So, for this go at a drag look, I took inspiration from music I would perform to if I was a drag performer. For me, this meant taking a look at artists like Jazmin Bean, Gurlldoll, Dorian Electra, and more artists in that same sort of genre. Which- I don’t know if it has a name? But if I had to describe it it’s incredibly electronic, loud, and dark.
In order to accomplish this look I used Elmer's Glue, Colourpop’s Proceed With Caution Pallette, Certifeye’s Tropical Wonder’s Pallette, NYX’s Cosmic Metals liquid lipstick inGalactic, Ben Nye Ultralite, and Ben Nye foundation.
Once again, here's my face without any product!
My next step was to cover my eyebrows and apply foundation. I should have been more patient with this step, but considering this look still took me the better part of 3 hours it’s not the end of the world for me. I briefly considered doing my eyes first and then doing foundation, however I didn’t know how big my eye look was going to get or how complicated, so I did foundation first.
Next, I did my highlight in yellow and did my contour in a normal colour. I stayed with the round feminine shapes for this step as I wanted to go for that more editorial look- just exaggerated and played with in terms of color.
At some point here I completely forgot to take ANY progress photos. But, the plan here was to go extremely big with the eyeliner look. This isn’t as big as some of the other looks I referenced, but I did keep true to having this sort of oil spill look with how the liner falls down the face. I was nervous about going too dark with the eyeliner, and I could have used even more to be accurate to what I had in my head. However, I do enjoy how it turned out because it still brings focus to the eyes and hairline, and is extremely round, which sticks to the more feminine contour I was going for. I also used the darkest lip I currently have, and I created more oil spillage. I also used some eyeshadow to accentuate the corners of my mouth.
While I didn’t take any progress shots of the liner, I did take a picture of my Proceed With Caution palette after it fell off of the counter. RIP, you will be missed. (I managed to salvage a couple of colors though, so yay!
I took another 20 minutes or so to find a wig I liked and settled on this long black wig as it was the one that helped bring this look together. But, I also really adore how this look pairs with my natural hair! This look is definitely feminine in inspiration, but I enjoy the fact that it is still relatively masculine as well. Ah the fragile gender binary.
